Vera Health vs OpenEvidence vs CliniAtlas
Following OpenEvidence’s withdrawal from the EU and UK, this page compares OpenEvidence and Vera Health with CliniAtlas on the questions that decide whether a tool is usable from Europe: who can sign up, where queries are processed, which sources are searched, how evidence is graded, and what each is intended for. Where the three actually differ
Access. OpenEvidence blocked EU and UK traffic in April 2026. Professional verification and geographic availability are separate requirements; check eligibility directly with the provider. Vera Health and CliniAtlas accept professional or student verification from Europe.
Data processing. This is the row institutions ask about first. Vera Health’s privacy policy says the service is hosted and operated in the United States and that personal data may be transferred outside the European Economic Area under standard contractual clauses. CliniAtlas runs its application and stored service data in AWS eu-central-1, while its global AWS Bedrock inference route may process questions outside the EU. See our privacy page. Neither tool needs patient data to answer an evidence question, and neither should be given any.
Sources. Vera Health describes a very large corpus of papers, guidelines, and care pathways with a US emphasis. CliniAtlas searches PubMed and Europe PMC per question and retrieves EMA product information and European guidelines as sources. Check the cited document’s jurisdiction: retrieval can also return US labels, and a requested European document is not guaranteed to be found.
Grading. Both Vera Health and CliniAtlas say they grade evidence, and the reader should check what that means in practice. CliniAtlas shows the study type next to every citation and separates what the retrieved evidence settles from what it does not. Vera Health describes grading before generation with linked sources. Neither replaces your own appraisal of the paper.
Intended use. Vera Health positions itself as clinical decision support, with differential diagnosis and treatment planning features. CliniAtlas is deliberately narrower: literature search, education, and professional evidence review, and it reframes patient-specific questions into general evidence reviews. In the EU, that scope matters for how a tool sits under the Medical Device Regulation, and the decision belongs to the vendor and your institution, not to a comparison page.
Benchmarks, honestly
Vera Health publishes its own benchmark figures on its site. CliniAtlas publishes HealthBench Hard results for its three-pass workflow, with the cohort, prompts, and scoring described in the methodology. Vendor-run benchmarks measure different things on different cases and are not comparable with each other. We have not run a head-to-head test of the three products and do not report one here.
