Perplexity for doctors: where it helps, where it fails

Perplexity offers cited web research and health-focused tools. For clinical questions, the important distinction is not simply web versus database search: it is whether the answer finds the relevant primary evidence and represents it accurately. This page compares product scope, not results from a head-to-head clinical evaluation. CliniAtlas is our product, and we are not affiliated with Perplexity.

CliniAtlas vs Perplexity for clinical evidence

 CliniAtlasPerplexity
What it searchesPubMed, Europe PMC, EMA labels and assessment reports, and European clinical guidelines, per question. The open web: news, institutional pages, forums, preprints, and journal pages, ranked by relevance.
How sources are chosenUses clinical retrieval tools and source-type labels. Relevance to the question still matters; study type alone does not establish quality.Web and research search, with sources and connectors depending on product and plan; inspect the actual evidence returned.
Citation granularityRetrieved-evidence answers link to sources such as PubMed records or regulatory documents. Not every response requires a new search or citations.Inline citations link to sources. As with any AI synthesis, check that the cited source actually supports the statement.
Evidence gradingShown per source: guideline, regulatory, systematic review, RCT, observational, and so on.Offers source labels and research tools; these should not be equated with a clinical certainty-of-evidence assessment.
Regulatory sourcesEMA SmPC and EPAR documents read directly. Can retrieve accessible regulatory pages through web search. Results depend on the query, source availability, and selected tools.
Patient dataTells users not to enter patient identifiers; core processing in the EU.A consumer product; check its current data terms before entering anything patient-adjacent, and see our GDPR guide.
Professional verificationEuropean HCP verification.None; a general consumer and professional product.
PriceFree for verified clinicians and students.Free tier plus paid plans.
Best atEvidence questions, recent trials, checking claims, European regulatory detail.Fast orientation on any topic, current news, drafting, and non-clinical tasks.
The short version: Perplexity answers from the web and cites pages. CliniAtlas answers from the literature and regulatory record and cites graded sources. Both can help with research. Their value depends on the question, retrieved sources, and the user’s verification; we have not demonstrated that one is universally better.

A concrete example

Ask whether a drug reduces mortality in a given population. With either tool, check whether the answer cites the actual randomized trial, distinguishes mortality from other outcomes, and states the population and uncertainty. A press release or review can provide orientation, but should not substitute for checking the primary result. A source-type label helps inspection; it does not guarantee a complete or correct answer.

The patient data question

The habit that gets clinicians into trouble is pasting a clinical vignette into a consumer tool to speed up the question. Whether that is lawful depends on the tool’s data terms and your role under GDPR, and the safe default is not to. Our guide on using ChatGPT with patient data explains the anonymisation trap and the patterns that avoid the problem, and why the applicable product terms and institutional approval need individual review.

Frequently asked questions

Can doctors use Perplexity for clinical questions?
Perplexity supports cited web and research answers, including health-focused offerings. For clinical evidence questions, inspect the primary studies, population, outcome and uncertainty. Citations alone do not establish correctness in Perplexity, CliniAtlas, or another assistant.
Is Perplexity GDPR compliant for patient data?
That is a question about its data terms and your role as controller, not about the model. As a general rule, consumer answer engines are not the place for patient-identifying information. Our guide on using ChatGPT with patient data covers the reasoning, and it applies to Perplexity equally.
Perplexity vs OpenEvidence: which is better for doctors?
OpenEvidence has restricted EU and UK access since April 2026. Perplexity offers general research and health-focused features, while CliniAtlas focuses on clinical evidence and European regulatory sources. Compare current access, source coverage and institutional requirements; this page does not establish a clinical accuracy ranking.
What is the two-tool pattern?
Use a general assistant for what it is good at: drafting, summarising a document you paste in, orientation on an unfamiliar topic. Use a cited evidence search for the clinical claim: what the trial showed, what the guideline says, what the EMA label states. Keep patient identifiers out of both.
Is CliniAtlas a clinical decision-support system?
No. It is a professional reference tool for literature search, education, and evidence review, not for diagnosis or patient-specific decisions.
